Liminal World.  Gina Glover

An exhibition curated by Shirley Read.

Liminal World consists of thirty colour photographs drawn from a much larger body of work begun nine years ago.   In 2000 Glover received an Arts Council award to develop a new area of her practice and chose to work with one of the earliest devices for freezing time, the pinhole camera.

This camera affords Glover enormous creative latitude to stretch the boundaries of the photographic moment. The necessary lengths of exposure mean that different qualities of light and the continuum of movement over time are captured on film.

Glover’s interest in subjective imagery is not accidental; she is fascinated by how the brain processes and interprets visual information. In the late eighties she suffered a severe reaction to anti-malarial drugs while on photographic assignment in Africa. Subsequently Glover intermittently experienced various visual shifts, viewing the world either in an intensity of colour or in shades of grey. This experience changed the way Glover approached her practice; her understanding that the way one sees the world might not be fixed has fuelled all her photographic interest since and especially the work featured in this exhibition.

Liminal World is an ongoing project where Glover searches for locations round the world which can convey the threshold between inner and outer worlds, time and impermanency. Glover’s small wooden box, with a pinhole at one end and roll film at the other, provides the means for her playful and yet meditative relationship to the world

These works have been selected by Shirley Read to bring together specific moments of liminality so that we may ask ourselves not only about the nature of photographic representation and the role of the photographer in this but about our relationship to time and our need to step out of the rush of contemporary life in order to understand it.
